Waystone is built by one person and runs on a small set of trusted services. We collect the minimum data needed to make the app work, and nothing else. We do not sell data. We do not track you across other sites. There are no third-party advertising networks anywhere in this product.

This document is the v1 policy that ships with TestFlight. If anything here is unclear or you want your data removed, write to hello@waystone-ai.org.

1. What we collect

When you use the Waystone iOS app, the following information is stored on our servers:

  • Sign-in identifier. If you sign in with Apple, we receive a stable pseudonymous identifier and (optionally) the email address you choose to share via “Hide My Email.” We do not receive your real Apple ID.
  • Approximate location. When you grant location permission, your GPS coordinates are used to find nearby heritage sites and generate narrations. Coordinates are sent with each narration request; we retain the coordinates of sites you have viewed, paired with your account, so the app can show you where you have already been.
  • Narration history. The list of sites you have requested narrations for, the narrator voice you used, and the resulting cost (per-call cost metering) is stored against your account. This lets us show your history in the app and lets us cap free usage fairly.
  • Bookmarks and saved sites. When you save or bookmark a site, that record is stored against your account so it syncs to your other devices.
  • Diagnostic logs. Errors and crash reports may be recorded so we can fix bugs. These are kept for 30 days and then deleted.

2. What we do not collect

  • We do not run any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
  • We do not sell or share your data with brokers, advertisers, or any third party for commercial purposes.
  • We do not track your location in the background. Location is read only while the app is open and you have explicitly granted permission.
  • We do not collect your contacts, photos, microphone, or any device sensor beyond GPS.
  • We do not use cookies for tracking on the waystone-ai.org website. The site sets no cookies in v1.

3. Who processes the data

Your data is processed by a small number of vendors strictly to deliver the service:

  • Cloudflare — hosts the API, stores the heritage database, and provides the D1 SQL database that holds your account and history. UK and EU regions.
  • Apple — provides Sign in with Apple and the App Store distribution.
  • Anthropic — provides the Claude model that drafts narrations from retrieved heritage passages. Narration prompts (the retrieved passages plus your selected voice) are sent to Anthropic at the moment of narration. We do not send your identifier or location to Anthropic; only the passages, voice setting, and site name.

4. How long we keep it

Account data is kept for as long as you keep the account. Diagnostic logs are kept for 30 days. If you delete your account, all account data is removed within 30 days. You can ask us to delete your data at any time by writing to hello@waystone-ai.org.

5. Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to ask us to delete it, and to receive an export of it. We will respond to any reasonable request within 30 days. The simplest way to exercise any of these rights is to email us at hello@waystone-ai.org.

6. Children

Waystone is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

7. Source data attribution

The heritage content the app retrieves is sourced from openly licensed datasets. We acknowledge those sources in line with the relevant licence terms:

  • Contains Historic England data © Historic England, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.
  • Contains Cadw data © Crown copyright, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.
  • Contains data from Coflein / RCAHMW, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.
  • Contains Wikipedia content, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Map base data © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).
  • Aerial archaeology features are derived from the Aerial Archaeology Mapping Explorer (Historic England), OGL v3.

8. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects what we collect or how we use it, we will update the version above and post a notice in the app before the change takes effect.
